Learning Journeys for the Global South
Our Story
Digital Frontiers Institute (DFI) acts as the learning-delivery environment for our overarching African non-profit parent organisation Digital Frontiers.
We directly manage all aspects of the participants learning journey which includes
- handling admissions
- delivering high-impact learning experiences through the proprietary learning platform
- coordinating and facilitating live virtual sessions with Technical Experts
- structuring long-term career pathways like the Certified Digital Finance Practitioner (CDFP) credential
- coordinating localised Communities of Practice (CoPs)
- championing ongoing Continuous Professional Development to convert individual learning into systemic market impact
The aim is not simply to strengthen individual capability, but to create the shared knowledge, relationships, professional identity, and mechanisms for collaboration that allow a sector to develop and respond collectively over time.
Founded in 2015 by David Porteous, Gavin Krugel, and Ignacio Mas, Digital Frontiers emerged at a time when digital and inclusive finance were in their early stages.
From the outset, our approach was practitioner- and subject-matter-expert-led. Rather than developing courses solely from an academic or theoretical perspective, the curriculum was grounded in real-world challenges and the practical knowledge required by professionals working in digital finance.
Experienced technical experts and practitioners played an important role in developing and delivering course content, bringing current market practice, examples and country-level realities into the learning experience. Practitioner knowledge was also incorporated through the way courses are taught. Case studies, practical exercises, discussion and peer learning allow participants to apply concepts to their own institutional and country contexts and to learn from the experiences of other practitioners. CoPs have further supported this exchange of knowledge beyond the formal course content.
Although the number of individuals trained and courses delivered are impressive metrics, the true impact of our approach goes well beyond instructional hours and course curricula. Digital Frontiers Institute alumni worldwide, new and old, are well-integrated into all levels of the financial inclusion ecosystem in their respective countries – and in cross-border institutions in the public and private sectors.
Nearly a dozen years of Digital Frontiers’ work in financial inclusion shows what can happen when professional learning is designed to move beyond individual capability and instead connect people across a sector around shared knowledge, language, relationships, and practice.
A shared professional journey can begin with structured learning, but it should be designed from the outset to connect people across institutions, roles, and perspectives and to continue beyond the formal learning experience.
The Digital Frontiers experience does not suggest that capacity-building alone changes systems. It suggests that learning can become part of the infrastructure of change when it builds professional capability across a system, connects people across institutional boundaries, supports locally led networks, and remains tied to the real decisions and challenges through which systems evolve.

Our Learning Platform
Our courses are delivered through our custom-designed learning platform. Learning materials are delivered in several formats and incorporate a variety of pedagogical styles, including video lectures, digital classroom discussions, bi-weekly calls, weekly reading materials, weekly quizzes, assessments, and casework.
Participants can work through the materials in their own time, participate in discussions in their digital classrooms, and share insights from their experiences.
Communities of Practice
Our Communities of Practice are at the heart of Digital Frontiers’ approach to building lasting capacity. More than networks, they are vibrant spaces where professionals come together—locally and globally—to exchange knowledge, collaborate on solutions, and accelerate inclusive digital transformation.
Meeting face-to-face and online, CoP members engage in dynamic conversations about industry-wide challenges and opportunities. These communities foster cooperation, knowledge sharing, and innovation across sectors, connecting regulators with innovators, and practitioners with peers who understand their context.
We believe change happens in ecosystems, not silos. That’s why our CoPs go beyond individual professional growth to catalyse systemic impact in the markets we serve. By strengthening relationships across the public and private sectors, they create the trust and alignment needed to advance national inclusion and equality agendas.
